Blood not available in the blood bank

A patient needs blood urgently and the blood bank says it is unavailable; the blood bank and the district health office are accountable.

Who is responsible

A blood bank is expected to maintain stocks of the common groups and to arrange for a rare group on request, and a patient needing urgent blood is entitled to know what is available and what the next step is. A recorded request to the blood bank officer creates a duty for the district to arrange supply, and a request for a rare group usually has to be met by contacting other blood banks in the state.

Important condition: For a rare group the hospital must also search its own contacts and the district administration often helps; a single refusal is not the end of the process.
